They say it is important, but I didn't get to hold my son until a couple hours after he was born. He was premature and had to get on oxygen right away. He and I are very close. He is a mama's boy.

It's pretty important. There are a lot of studies saying the baby feels more secure if they have direct skin to skin contact as soon as they're born with their mama. I'm so sorry for the lose of your boyfriend, and I hope all goes well with your baby boy!

I was always led to believe it's part of the bonding process and very important to the mother and child to feel the warmth and closeness.
Not sure why but I know as soon as my baby is born (when I eventually get pregnant) I want my husband to help deliver baby, cut the cord and bring baby straight to me before baby is cleaned and checked and everything and then feed baby.
